During the COVID pandemic that began in 2020 we saw a global surge in domestic violence against women. In Australia Coca-Cola’s campaign coincided. It was a campaign where slabs of coke cans were customised with terms like “the boys” “mate” “the lads”. I couldn’t help notice how masculinity was commodified and promoted. I too customised a coke can with a slur that is a part of everyday slang to highlight the commodification of a culture of violent toxic masculinity and how it is normalised in my culture.
