I am a mixed media artist working across graphic design, photo manipulation, video, animation, sound, drawing, sculpture and painting. My practice is concept-led, with the idea determining the medium, often resulting in works that blur the boundaries between physical and digital.
I weaponise humour to explore culture, commerce and the male gaze, forces that have shaped and defined me in ways I didn’t always choose. Growing up between Turkish and Australian identity means inhabiting a space that is at once familiar and foreign. I interrogate the absurdities of capitalism and turn consumer culture’s own visual language back on itself, subverting the influence it tries to have while reclaiming agency from the male gaze.
I use symbols and imagery that are recognisable enough to draw viewers in, yet askew enough to encourage inquisitiveness. My work explores the uncertain boundary between reality and absurdity.
Ultimately, I make this work to make sense of my own experience of the world, and to connect with others.
